Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for health (1) pursuant to his reply of 19 DecemberOfficial Report, column 1134, if he will make it his policy to answer parliamentary questions or letters from hon. Members on behalf of the Special Hospitals Service Authority; [7991]

(2) what consideration led him not to forward to the SHSA the hon. Member's question of 19 December about the use of telephones by inmates in institutions from the criminally insane. [7986]

Mr. Bowis

The management and operation of the special hospitals are the responsibility of the Special Hospitals Service Authority. It is not our practice to forward parliamentary questions to health authorities for reply, but it is open to the hon. Member to raise these matter with the chairman of the authority.

Mr. Prentice

To ask the Secretary of state for Health if he will list the membership of the Special Hospitals Service Authority, together with the dates of appointment and retirement. [7987]

Mr. Bowis

The members of the authority and the dates on which they were first appointed are listed as follows. We have announced proposals for abolishing the authority from 1 April 1996 and shall shortly be laying the necessary regulations to give effect to this.
