HC Deb 09 January 1996 vol 269 c36W
Mr. Matthew Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to promote the planning and installation of microwave landing systems. [7936]

Mr. Norris

The Civil Aviation Authority is responsible for the planning and installation of air traffic control infrastructure. I understand, that the National Air Traffic Services has a well-established research and development programme for microwave landing systems, which has involved the use of fixed and mobile prototype MLS equipment. By April 1996, this should have led to the installation of a fully operational category III—the worst weather conditions—MLS at Heathrow airport.
