To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the change in real disposable incomes each year since 1981 together with his estimate of next year's change. [7413]

Information on real personal disposable income is published annually in the Central Statistical Office Blue Book, quarterly in the CSO press notice quarterly national accounts and is held on the CSO data base; all sources are available in the Library. The latest estimates of percentage changes in real personal disposable income since 1981 are as follows:

  • 1981: -0.8
  • 1982: -0.5
  • 1983: 2.7
  • 1984: 3.6
  • 1985: 3.4
  • 1986: 4.5
  • 1987: 3.4
  • 1988: 6.0
  • 1989: 4,8
  • 1990: 1.8
  • 1991: -0.1
  • 1992. 2.3
  • 1993: 1.6
  • 1994: 0.7.

The budget forecast for growth in real personal disposable income was 2 per cent, in 1995 and 2¾per cent. in 1996.
