HC Deb 09 January 1996 vol 269 c39W
Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many(a) buses and (b) coaches operating on British roads are more than (i) 30, (ii) 20 and (iii) 10 years old. [8105]

Mr. Norris

The records held by DVLA show that, at the end of 1994, the number of licensed public service vehicles in the bus taxation class were as follows, by year of first registration:

  1. (i) 30 years old or more, 309
  2. (ii) 20 years old or more, 2,807
  3. (iii)10 years old or more, 34,203.

The split between bus body type and coach body type is not readily available.

Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to reduce pollution caused by buses and coaches through(a) obsolete technology and (b) poor maintenance. [8107]

Mr. Norris

The Government are committed to cracking down on unnecessary pollution from vehicles. Emissions standards for vehicles in service, including buses and coaches, were tightened in September 1995. Buses and coaches found to exceed the prescribed emissions standards at annual tests will fail the test. In addition, compliance with emission standards is enforced both at the roadside and in operators' premises by vehicles examiners who issue prohibition notices to any vehicle exceeding the limit preventing its being used.

Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proportion of(a) buses and (b) coaches currently operating on British roads have failed to reach required acceptable levels of exhaust emissions. [8116]

Mr. Norris
