Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. John Home Robertson, dated 20 December 1995: The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Questions about what payments were made by his Department from April 1981 to December 1994 to the Algrade Trust in respect of the care and accommodation of handicapped people at Humbie, East Lothian; and what estimate he has made of the proportion of that money which was spent on such care and accommodation by the Algrade Trust. Details of payments for the period April 1981 to November 1986 could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. Appendices A-H give details of the amounts issued in respect of the period from 1 December 1986 to 30 January 1995. The payment made in January 1995 has been included as it covers the period from 1 November 1994 to 30 January 1995. Payments to the Algrade Trust were made in respect of care, accommodation, meals and personal expenses. It is not possible therefore to give details of the payments made for care and accommodation only. The Secretary of State discharges his responsibilities for the administration of benefit once he has made payments to the customer or appropriate body. I hope you find this reply helpful.
