HC Deb 29 February 1996 vol 272 cc719-20W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what arrangements have been made for the long-term monitoring of the effects of the oil spill on the marine ecosystem around the Pembrokeshire coast. [17970]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales has provided £250,000 to the Countryside Council for Wales to enable it to conduct a study of the entire marine environment, and initiate a long-term monitoring programme, in the area affected by the spill.

Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what resources he has made available to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to assist those organisations in their rescue of sea birds and other wildlife affected by oil from the Sea Empress. [18108]

Mr. Jones

Compensation for cost incurred and economic loss suffered as a result of the oil pollution damage from the Sea Empress, including the costs of reasonable measures taken to prevent or minimise the damage, are available from the ship owner's insurer and from the international oil compensation fund, which is funded by levies on the oil industry.
