To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many licensed abattoirs there were in(a) Wales, (b) England, (c) Scotland and (d) Northern Ireland at the end of 1995; and if he will make a statement. [17554]

In respect of(a), (b) and (c) the lists set out the number of slaughterhouses licensed at the end of 1995 under (i) the Fresh Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995 and (ii) the Poultry Meat, Farmed Game Bird Meat and Rabbit Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995:

  1. (i) The Fresh Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995
    • Wales: 36
    • England: 402
    • Scotland: 48
  2. (ii) The Poultry Meat, Farmed Game Bird Meat and Rabbit Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1995
    • Wales: 11
    • England: 144
    • Scotland: 8

In respect of (d) I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, who is responsible for the licensing of slaughterhouses in Northern Ireland.
