HC Deb 28 February 1996 vol 272 c583W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people are employed by companies from(a) Japan, (b) the European Union and (c) the United States of America in Wales; and if he will make a statement. [16508]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The number of people currently employed by Japanese-owned manufacturing companies in Wales is 13,147; for European Union manufacturing companies, the figure is 19,487; and, for United States-owned manufacturing companies, the figure is 30,439. Wales has an excellent inward investment record which complements the part played by indigenous companies in the economic well-being of the country.

Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people are employed by overseas-owned manufacturing companies in Wales; and if he will make a statement. [16509]

Mr. Jones

Some 70,670 people are employed by overseas-owned manufacturing companies in Wales. These are valuable jobs provided by some of the biggest companies in the world. Their contribution to the Welsh economy is enormous and I am keen to see that contribution increased even further.
