To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many egg and poultry producers there(a) were in 1986 and (b) are currently. [17178]

Estimates for England from the June 1987 agricultural and Horticultural census—the earliest date for which figures are readily available—and the June 1995 agricultural and horticultural census are shown in the table.

3 producing both eggs and poultry covers those holdings returning under the census questions headed 'Hens and pullets kept mainly for producing eggs for eating' while also returning any other poultry questions.
