HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 cc262-3W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's estimate of mean sea levels for each five year period since 1965; and what estimates they have made for mean sea levels for(a) 2000 and (b) 2005. [15940]

Mr. Clappison

The second scientific assessment of the intergovernmental panel on climate change estimates that the global mean sea level has risen steadily by 18 cm over the past century. Over the next decade the underlying rise is projected to be in the range 1 to 5 cm, although large natural variability at particular measurement sites will make this difficult to detect on this timescale.
