HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 cc244-5W
20. Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans he has for the tape recording of interviews with terrorist suspects; and if he will make a statement. [15040]

Sir John Wheeler

The Government have concluded that it would be possible to introduce silent video-recording of interviews with terrorist suspects, and my right hon. and learned Friend has recently announced his intention to do so. Provision for the silent video-recording of interviews with terrorist suspects was included in the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Bill at Report stage on 19 February.

However, after serious consideration the Government have concluded that it would not be right to introduce audio recording of interviews with terrorist suspects in Northern Ireland, given the serious risks to life were the tapes subsequently to come into the public domain.

This measure will be a further addition to the wide range of safeguards already in place in the holding centres.
