To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what has been the total amount of compensation paid by the Government to farmers in the United Kingdom in respect of the Chernobyl disaster; and if he will make a statement. [16323]

As at 31 January 1996, the total amount of compensation paid under the sheep compensation scheme by the Government to farmers in the United Kingdom in respect of the Chernobyl disaster has been£12,096,842. The scheme was introduced in July 1986 to compensate farmers whose enterprises had been disrupted as a result of movement and slaughter restrictions associated with the Chernobyl accident.
