HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 cc245-6W
26. Mr. Hawkins

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what assessment he has made of the level of observance of the ceasefire by organisations previously engaged in terrorism in the Province; and if he will make a statement. [15046]

Sir John Wheeler

The recent terrorist incidents in London, where three people lost their lives and scores of people have been injured, is a stark reminder of what terrorists are capable of.

During the ceasefire period, terrorist organisations continued to engage in various criminal activities such as murder, punishment beatings, robberies and racketeering. They also continued to train and to target individuals and installations.

The police have a good clear-up rate for terrorist crime and will make arrests whenever possible.
