HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 cc211-2W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Warley, West (Mr. Spellar) on 13 February,Official Report, column 493, if he will describe the nature of the new restrictions. [16145]

Mr. Arbuthnot

The new US restrictions require a range of naval engineering and navigation equipment to be procured from domestic sources only, subject to certain limited waiver provisions. The new restrictions include the procurement of marine unique gyrocompasses, electronic navigation chart systems, steering controls, pumps, propulsion and machinery control systems. In addition, for a period of one year, new restrictions will apply to procurement of the main propulsion engines for the LPD-17 class of vessels and the emergency generator set for the new Attack submarine. These restrictions are renewable in future legislation.
