To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is the estimated cost during 1997 of industrial tribunal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. [16080]

The average cost to public expenditure of an industrial tribunal application in 1994–95 was £377. Current estimates are that there will be some 3,000 claims per annum made under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. On this basis, the cost during 1997 will be around £1,131,000.
