To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment(a) how many 11 to 16-year-old pupils are permanently excluded from (i) local education authority secondary schools and (ii) grant-maintained secondary schools for the most recent year for which figures are available, (b) 11 to 16-year-old pupils have been admitted following permanent exclusion from another school to (1) local education authority secondary schools and (2) grant-maintained secondary schools and (c) the total number of schools in each category in that year. The information is as follows:

  1. (a) A survey published by the Department in July 1995 showed that in the academic year 1993–94, 8,960 pupils were excluded from secondary schools within the 101 local education authorities that responded. The data returned did not distinguish between grant-maintained and other schools.
  2. (b) This information is not available.
  3. (c) There were 3,035 local education authority maintained secondary schools and 594 grant-maintained schools at the end of the academic year 1993–94.
