To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when construction work will start on the modernisation of the west coast main line. [15298]

§ Mr. Watts
It is Railtrack's intention to invite tenders and award the main works implementation contract later this year.
A programme of initial modernisation work is being planned to commence this summer and will be targeted in those areas from which the greatest benefits can be gained.
