To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many doctors worked in the NHS in each year since 1979. [14854]

The number of doctors working in the NHS has increased by 23 per cent. from 67,110 in 1979 to 82,680 in 1994, the most recent year for which figures are available. Figures for each year from 1979 to 1994 are shown in the table.
