Mr. Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland, pursuant to his answer of 14 December,Official Report, column 817, if the figures for hospitality spending in 1994–95 and 1995–96 included expenditure by his Department's agencies. [9092]

Mr. Forsyth

No. Moreover, it has come to my attention that the information provided in my answer of 14 December was in other respects incomplete. This arose from a misunderstanding of the implications of a change made in the financial year 1990–91 to the arrangements for recording hospitality expenditure by my Department.

The corrected information is as follows:

  • 1994–95: £79,510
  • 1995–96: £89,868 (Projected outturn)1

Note:

1 In addition, in 1995–96, the Scottish Office spent £34,680 on hospitality as part of the Government's contribution to the VE-day and VJ-day commemorations.

I regret that, for the same reason, information previously provided to hon. Members on hospitality expenditure for the years 1991–92 to 1993–94 was similarly incomplete. The correct information for these years is as follows:

  • 1991–92: £83,836
  • 1992–93: £125,118
  • 1993–94: £76,088
