HC Deb 07 February 1996 vol 271 c192W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy towards the appeals by the World Food Programme and the Food and Agricultural Organisation for assistance in alleviating the famine in North Korea; what aid and assistance the British Government have offered those agencies; and if he will make a statement. [13951]

Mr. Hanley

Our policy is to give humanitarian aid where there is a need. We have already donated £150,000 to the flood relief efforts of the United Nations. What is necessary now is to ascertain the scope of the problem in North Korea.

We are therefore funding a secondment to the World Food Programme operation in North Korea, at its request, of two nutritionists from the Save the Children Fund. They will work to and support the WFP country director there. The secondment begins this week.
