HC Deb 07 February 1996 vol 271 cc206-7W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will(a) provide for 1992 the simple aggregate averages of (i) the GCSE average point scores, (ii) the percentages achieving at least 5 grades A* to C, (iii) the percentages achieving the least 5 grades A* to G and (iv) the percentages achieving at least one grade A* to G of the schools of each 10th group of all maintained schools with 15-year-old pupils when ranked by their average point scores (A* = 7), (b) the same averages for each of those 10 groups of the same schools in 1993, 1994 and 1995, so far as possible in the case of any closures, (c) the number of schools and the total number of 15-year-old pupils in each 10th group in each year and (d) the percentages of each 10th group of these schools that were inspected by Ofsted in the their annual inspections in 1993–94, in 1994–95 and in 1993–95. [12897]

Mrs. Gillan

The following lists for maintained secondary schools in England for 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 shows (i) the average GCSE point scores, (ii) the average percentages achieving five or more GCSE grades A* to C, (iii) the average percentages achieving five or more GCSE grades A* to G, (v) the number of schools and (vi) the number of 15-year-old pupils in 10th group ranked by average GCSE point scores in 1992. These figures are based on the school performance tables published in the relevant years. The groups are based on schools that appeared in 1992 and these same schools have been followed through for 1993, 1994 and 1995. The group averages are simple averages which are not weighted by number of pupils in individual schools within a group.

The number of schools inspected by Ofsted is a matter for Her Majesty's chief inspector of schools, who heads the Office for Standards in Education. I have asked Mr. Chris Woodhead to write to the hon. Member.
