asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will announce the outcome of the prior options study of the Office of the Data Protection Registrar.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Blatch):

The study has concluded that there is still a need for the controls provided by the Data Protection Act 1984, and that these should continue to he performed by the Data Protection Registrar as an independent public body. We are placing a copy of the report of the study in the Library.
