asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of (a) male and (b) female prisoners serving sentences during 1994 had no previous convictions, one or two previous convictions, and three or more previous convictions, respectively.

Baroness Blatch:

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Lady Blatch has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question asking what proportion of (a) male and (b) female prisoners serving sentences during 1994 had no previous convictions; one or two previous convictions; and three and more previous convictions, respectively.

The information requested is given in the attached table. More detailed information for adult males, adult females and male young offenders will be contained in the 1994 edition of Prison Statistics, England and Wales (tables 3.6, 4.2 and 5.2), which is due to be published on 9 February, a copy of which will he placed in the Library of the House.
