§ Mr. SackvilleCivil defence grant is provided to local authorities as a contribution towards their expenses in meeting their civil defence responsibilities. The following table sets out the total approved expenditure for 1996–97 in respect of each fire and civil defence authority, metropolitan district, London borough, county council and unitary authority. I regret that it would be possible to provide a meaningful breakdown of this expenditure for all the authorities in the nine categories requested only at disproportionate cost.
