Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Alan Milburn, dated 11 December 1996: The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent question on the average gross weekly income in 1995–96 by decile group for certain household compositions. Estimates from the Family Expenditure Survey (FES) for average gross normal weekly income in 1995–96 by decile group for these household compositions are shown in the attached table. The figures are subject to sampling variations; have been rounded to the nearest 10 pence; are averages for each household composition and have not been adjusted to reflect household composition.
