HL Deb 10 December 1996 vol 576 c88WA
Lord Northfield

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When the feasibility study of pedestrianisation of Trafalgar Square will be completed; and whether this will leave enough time for any public works to be completed in time for the Millennium Celebrations.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of National Heritage (Lord Inglewood)

The master plan study for the Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Square area will be completed by the end of January 1997. The objectives of the study are to consider ways of increasing public access to and enjoyment of the area concerned, while enhancing the heritage setting. There can be no presumption at this stage that pedestrianisation of any particular areas will result. The consultants' brief requires their report to include proposals for specific projects that can be completed by the millennium.
