HL Deb 10 December 1996 vol 576 cc89-90WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why HM Prison Service wish to stop Prisoner No. 467638 from producing Braille Bibles, a task he has performed with great success over many years, and which he intends to continue if and when he is released.

Baroness Blatch

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter to Lord Avebury from the Director of Security and Programmes, the Prison Service, Mr. A. J. Pearson.

Lady Blatch has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your Question about Prisoner No. 467638.

There is no intention to prevent this prisoner from undertaking specialised Braille work as a consequence of his transfer to another prison. Arrangements are being made to allow his involvement in that work to continue. In due course, and as part of his progress through his life sentence plan, he will be expected to give a higher proportion of his time to activities more explicitly designed to address his offending behaviour.
