HL Deb 05 December 1996 vol 576 c62WA
Viscount Exmouth

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list for the last five years for which figures are available—(a) the countries of origin for immigrants and asylum seekers known to have entered the United Kingdom; and (b) the number of successful applicants for asylum from each country.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Blatch)

The main available measure of longer term immigration of persons subject to immigration control is the statistics of acceptances for settlement. The statistics are given in table 6.5 of the annual publicationControl of Immigration: Statistics United Kingdom 1995 (Cm 3353). Information on the numbers who entered the United Kingdom in various categories of immigration control, the vast majority of whom did so for temporary purposes, is given in table 3.1. Information on the number of asylum applications submitted, and on initial decisions made, in the United Kingdom in each of these years is given in tables 2.1, and tables 3.1 to 3.3 of the Home Office statistical bulletin Asylum Statistics United Kingdom, 1995, issue 9/96.

Copies of both publications are available in the Library.
