Mrs. Angela Knight

[holding answer 28 November 1996]The information requested falls within the responsibility of the chief executive of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Tim Holt to Ms Judith Church, dated 4 December 1996: The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent question on how many people have experienced at least one spell of claimant unemployment in all Employment Service Jobcentres within the Dagenham Parliamentary Constituency Area since 1992. Since January 1992, there have been approximately 18,700 claimants who have experienced at least one spell of claimant unemployment at the Dagenham Employment Service Jobcentre. This reflects in large part the dynamics of the labour market and in particular the significant numbers flowing on and off the claimant count each month. Since January 1992 there have been about 29,000 new claims for unemployment-related benefits which have been made at Dagenham Employment Service Jobcentre and about the same number of claims which have been terminated.
