To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many children are now educated in(a) grant-maintained schools, (b) grammar schools, (c) city technology colleges, (d) specialist schools and (e) through an assisted places scheme.[6757]

A total of 29,900 pupils held assisted places in independent schools in the school year 1995–96.

The latest available information on pupils in grant-maintained, selective and specialist schools and city technology colleges is shown in the following table.
