HC Deb 04 December 1996 vol 286 c683W
Dr. Goodson-Wickes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer of 26 November,Official Report, column 224, on doctors needed in the NHS, if he will list the years of intake for the 500 medical students and the number to be accepted in each year. [7129]

Mr. Malone

Further to the reply of 26 November, the medical work force standing advisory committee recommended an increase in the number of medical students from 4,470 in 1995 to 4,970 in 2000. Target intakes for individual medical schools and the pacing of the increase are a matter for the higher education funding councils. The target set for 1996–97 was 4,736. I understand a decision has yet to be made on the 1997–98 target.
