HC Deb 03 December 1996 vol 286 cc610-1W
Sir Ralph Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many children under five years of age in Norfolk were in private nursery schools and playgroups(a) before the introduction of nursery vouchers and (b) at the latest date for which figures are available. [6738]

Mr. Robin Squire

Information on children under five years of age in private nursery schools and play groups is not collected centrally.

In the summer term 1996 some 3,660 four-year-olds attended private and voluntary providers in Norfolk under phase 1 of the nursery education voucher scheme. Further details are given in chapter 6 of the Department's report on phase 1 published on 13 November. Copies are in the Library.
