To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the amount his Department has spent on road building in each of the last five financial years, the projects which were undertaken and the cost of each project; and say what is the planned expenditure by his Department on road building in each of the next five financial years. The Secretary of State's total expenditure incurred on road building covers expenditure on motorways and trunk roads and expenditure on local roads. Table 1 shows the amount spent on roads from 1991–92 to 1995–96.

With regard to planned expenditure for the next five years, my right hon. Friend will make an announcement on the roads programme for the next three years after he has set out his new expenditure plans for the Scottish Office. The latter announcement is expected in December.
