HC Deb 02 December 1996 vol 286 c547W
Mr. Kevin Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the amount spent on purchasing health care from the private sector by general practitioner fundholders in each year since 1991–92. [6601]

Mr. Malone

The information is shown in the table. The proportion of funds spent by fundholding general practitioners on private health care has been broadly comparable to the proportion spent by health authorities.

Year Expenditure on private healthcare (£ million) Percentage of GP fundholder budgets (HCHS)
1991–92 3.7 0.9
1992–93 13.1 1.6
1993–94 29.9 1.6
1994–95 52.5 1.9
