HC Deb 29 April 1996 vol 276 cc348-9W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list those projects concerned with the conversation of tropical rainforests, or species within them, funded through the global environment facility, together with sums of money which have been committed internationally to each project; and if he will indicate if each project forms part of biodiversity action plans published by the Governments of the countries in which the projects are located. [25925]

Mr. Hanley

Further to the holding reply of 23 April, the table lists relevant projects and is based on information supplied by the secretariat of the global environment facility. Under the biodiversity convention, each party is obliged to develop or adapt national plans, strategies or programmes for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in accordance with its particular conditions and capabilities. Many countries have yet to complete or adapt these plans. Some of the projects listed will assist in the formulation of these plans. However, all GEF projects relate to the recipient Governments' existing relevant environmental plans. These are listed in the table.
