HC Deb 25 April 1996 vol 276 c250W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the effects on accident levels of inappropriately sited(a) security lights and (b) lights used on motorways to illuminate repair work. [26779]

Mr. Watts

I have asked the chief executive of the Highways Agency to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Mr. Paul Flynn, dated 25 April 1996: The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to write to you in reply to your recent Parliamentary Question about the assessment of the effects on accident levels of inappropriately sited security lighting and lighting used on motorways to illuminate repair works. I am not aware of any studies into the relationship between security lighting and road accidents. The Highways Agency has carried out a number of accident studies at roadworks over the years and the illumination of repair works has not been identified as causing a safety problem.
