To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many qualified paramedics there are per head of population in(a) Wales, (b) Scotland, (c) England, (d) Northern Ireland and (e) the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement. [24594]

These figures are not routinely collected centrally, but an informal survey in England showed that there were 6,250 paramedics at 31 January 1996–1.28 per 10,000 population.

Figures relating to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales and for Scotland and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
