HC Deb 16 April 1996 vol 275 c382W
Sir Michael Shersby

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many applications he has received during the most recent 12 month period for which information is available for permission to compulsorily purchase metropolitan open space in accordance with section 19 of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981; how many certificates he has given; and if he will make a statement. [24950]

Mr. Robert B. Jones

During the year ended 31 March 1996, Government offices received 12 requests for certificates under section 19 of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981, relating to compulsory purchase of open space. They issued seven certificates during the same period.

Section 19 sets out a scheme of special protection for commons, open space and certain allotments which ensures that the national stock of such special land is not eroded through piecemeal compulsory purchase.
