HC Deb 16 April 1996 vol 275 c422W
Mr. Clapham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what proportion of claimants awarded a five-year provisional disablement assessment for industrial deafness lose it after the initial five-year period; and what is the main reason given for discontinuing it. [24817]

Mr. Roger Evans

The information is not readily available in the format requested and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The number of all re-assessments in respect of occupational deafness, including those following the initial five-year assessment, and those re-assessed to less than 20 per cent. for the latest years available, is set out in the table. In the case of occupational deafness, entitlement to industrial injuries disablement benefit ceases if the percentage assessment of disability is less than 20 per cent.

Occupational deafness re-assessments
Period Number referred for re-assessment Number re-assessed to less than 20 per cent.
1990 1,192 126
1991 1,169 145
1992 1,098 182
1993 1,136 177
1994 896 122

Based on 100 per cent. count of cases.

Mr. Clapham
