§ Mr. HanleyMy right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary discussed the current tensions between China and Taiwan when he met US Secretary of State Christopher in Moscow on 23 March. They agreed to remain in close contact and to urge both sides to resume dialogue as soon as possible.
§ 25. Rev. Martin SmythTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Chinese Government over their planned exercises off Taiwan.[22638]
§ Mr. HanleyWe made our grave concerns about the Chinese military exercises known to the Chinese both directly and through our public and parliamentary 279W statements. The EU issued a statement on 8 March. Although military exercises have now finished, we continue to urge restraint and an early resumption of cross-straits dialogue.
