HC Deb 03 April 1996 vol 275 cc278-9W
22. Mr. Campbell-Savours

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he is having with representatives of the Government of the USA on the question of differences between China and the USA over the future of Taiwan. [22635]

Mr. Hanley

My right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary discussed the current tensions between China and Taiwan when he met US Secretary of State Christopher in Moscow on 23 March. They agreed to remain in close contact and to urge both sides to resume dialogue as soon as possible.

25. Rev. Martin Smyth

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Chinese Government over their planned exercises off Taiwan.[22638]

Mr. Hanley

We made our grave concerns about the Chinese military exercises known to the Chinese both directly and through our public and parliamentary statements. The EU issued a statement on 8 March. Although military exercises have now finished, we continue to urge restraint and an early resumption of cross-straits dialogue.
