HC Deb 02 April 1996 vol 275 c208W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on his policy concerning the welfare of farm animals. [23532]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The welfare of livestock on agricultural land is protected in Great Britain by the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968 which makes it an offence to cause unnecessary distress or pain to any livestock. Subordinate legislation and associated welfare codes lay down more detailed requirements which are enforced by the State Veterinary Service.
