HC Deb 01 April 1996 vol 275 c81W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what new measures he will take to tackle homelessness; and if he will make a statement. [23744]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

There is a comprehensive range of measures in Wales to tackle homelessness and encourage the provision of suitable housing, especially for those least able to help themselves.

Our approach is working: homelessness in Wales is falling. In the nine months to 30 September 1995—latest figures available—the number of cases of homelessness accepted by Welsh local authorities fell by 13.9 per cent. compared to the same period in 1994. There was also a large reduction—44.6 per cent.—in the use of bed-and-breakfast accommodation at 30 September 1995 compared to the same point in 1994.
