HC Deb 30 October 1995 vol 265 cc104-5W
Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how teaching hours per pupil and teaching standards in hospitals are monitored. [38547]

Mr. Robin Squire

Local education authorities have a duty to make suitable educational provision for pupils who are out of school because of illness or injury. The initial responsibility for monitoring such provision is, therefore, that of the maintaining authority. The inspection of provision made in a hospital school is the responsibility of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools, who heads the Office for Standards in Education. I have asked HMCI to write to the hon. Member about the specific points that he has raised.
