To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment he has made of the transparent additionality of funds sought from the EC; and if he will make a statement. [37848]

Mr. Hague

Following my recent meeting with Commissioner Wulf-Mathies, the Commission has accepted that European structural funds are properly spent in Wales. As a result, £11.4 million of European regional aid to Wales has been released. The measures taken to improve the transparency of the presentation of grants to public bodies will make it very clear that European funds reach and will continue to reach those communities for which they are intended.
