HC Deb 30 October 1995 vol 265 cc61-2W
Mr. Gapes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps her Majesty's Government have taken to secure full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 752 and withdrawal of regular Croation forces from Bosnian territory. [40015]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

Since that resolution in 1991, the United Kingdom has deployed up to 9,000 troops in Bosnia, contributed more than £275.5 million in humanitarian aid and played a leading role in trying to reach a comprehensive settlement to the conflict there.

Mr. Gapes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many refugees have been driven out of Krajina by the Croatian army; and what assistance Her Majesty's Government and the international community are giving to them. [40017]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that approximately 11,000 refugees moved from sector west into northern Bosnia following the Croation military offensive in May. In August, approximately 200,000 Croation Serbs fled from sectors north and south and some 25,000 Bosnian Muslims left the Bihac pocket for Croatia. We have contributed more than £2 million in grants through non-governmental organisations—Oxfam, Save the Children and the British Red Cross—to meet emergency needs of these refugees, as part of comprehensive assistance programme co-ordinated by UNHCR.
