HC Deb 30 October 1995 vol 265 c13W
s Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many parents with dependent children claiming income support were receiving maintenance in each year since 1989; and in the case of Child Support Agency assessments, how many of these were minimum assessments of £2.30 or less. [37589]

Andrew Mitchell

[holding answer 24 October 1995]: The numbers of income support recipients with dependants receiving maintenance were:

Year Cases
1989 174,000
1990 171,000
1991 194,000
1992 210,000
1993 196,000
1994 114,000

The figure for 1994 covers only cases in which maintenance is paid directly between the two parties. Figures are not yet available for maintenance collected by the Department.

Number of cases with maintenance of £2.30 or less
Year Cases
1989 7,000
1990 5,000
1991 8,000
1992 7,000
1993 4,000
1994 4,000

It is not possible to break this down to show amounts due solely to Child Support Agency assessments. Again, the figure for 1994 covers only cases where maintenance is paid directly between the parties.
