HC Deb 27 October 1995 vol 264 cc854-5W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people pay the cost of their nursing home care(a) in full and (b) in part; and how many have their costs entirely met through (i) income support or (ii) their local authority. [40184]

Mr. Hague

Nursing homes in Wales reported that of their 10,661 residents on 31 March 1994:

  • 1,845 were wholly privately supported;
  • 5,128 were supported in whole or in part by the Department of Social Security;
  • 1,322 were supported in whole or in part by both the local authority and the Department of Social Security;
  • 933 were supported in whole or in part by the local authority;
  • 45 were supported by the health authority;
  • 1,388 residents did not disclose their means of financial support.

Separate figures are not collected centrally to show the proportions of fees that are met by individuals. Almost all residents placed in nursing homes by local authorities will make some contribution towards the costs from their income, such as pensions.

Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will estimate the cost of(a) doubling and (b) trebling the present £8,000 capital disregard for nursing home fees. [40188]

Mr. Hague

I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to him today by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Health.

Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what is his estimate of the number of people who have had to sell their homes to fund the cost of their long-term stay in(a) residential and (b) nursing homes in each of the last five years; [40176]

(2) what is the average length of time a person spends in full time nursing care. [40180]

Mr. Hague
