HC Deb 27 October 1995 vol 264 c869W
Mr. Gapes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will estimate(a) how many residents of the former Yugoslavia became refugees between January and between January and May. (b) how many refugees resulted from the Croatian military offensive in Krajina in May and (c) how many refugees have been created since 31 August. [39995]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

The only figures available from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimate that approximately 3,300 refugees went from northern Bosnia to Croatia between January and April.

The UNCHR estimates that approximately 11,000 refugees moved from sector west into northern Bosnia following the Croatian military offensive in May.

In August, approximately 200,000 Croatian Serbs fled from sectors north and south and some 25,000 Bosnian Muslims left the Bihac pocket for Croatia.

Since 31 August, approximately 127,000 Serbs have been displaced within north-west Bosnia; more than 20,000 Croat and Muslim minorities have been expelled from Banja Luka.
