HC Deb 25 October 1995 vol 264 c697W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were(a) killed and (b) injured in road accidents in the last five years; and if he will make a statement. [37990]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The information requested is given in the following table.

Fatal Non-fatal Total
1981–85 average 641 26,502 27,142
1990 546 26,675 27,221
1991 490 24,849 25,339
1992 463 23,709 24,172
1993 399 22,016 22,415
1994 363 22,220 22,583

The continuing fall in the number of fatalities to the lowest on record is very encouraging and good progress is being made towards achieving the Government's target of reducing overall causalities by one third by the year 2000 compared with 1981–85 average. The Scottish Office and local authorities will continue to take forward road safety initiative designed to contribute towards achieving the target.
