To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average weekly cost of imprisonment in each category of prison(a) in 1985, (b) in 1990 and (c) in the latest year for which figures are available. [37958]

The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the average weekly cost of imprisonment in each category of prison.

The attached table gives the average weekly net operating cost per inmate for the years 1984–85, 1989–90 and 1993–94, which is the latest year for which figures are readily available.
